The famous Picasso Museum is the first must-see visit in the heart of Antibes. This former residence of the bishops, then of the Grimaldi family for several centuries, houses a remarkable collection of the painter Pablo Picasso. In 1946, Picasso even used part of the building as a studio, at the suggestion of the museum’s first curator. In 1957, the world-famous artist was officially awarded the title of “Honorary Citizen of the City of Antibes”. Among the most famous paintings, you will find “Joie de vivre”, “Satyr” or “La femme aux oursins”. You can also admire a very rich collection of modern art, including paintings by Hans Hartung.
The building of the Musée Picasso d’Antibes itself is magnificent. Built on the foundations of the Greek city Antipolis, the walls incorporate ancient Roman walls to a height of 3 to 5 metres. The tallest tower was built around the 11th century, at the same time as the La Castre Museum in Cannes, and stands 25 metres high.
